Redhawks Take Second Straight Series with Doubleheader Sweep Over Bearkats

SEATTLE - Seattle U softball claimed its second straight Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series victory on Saturday, taking both games of the doubleheader over Sam Houston with final scores of 11-5 and 6-3. Olivia Viggiano enjoyed a fabulous weekend at the plate, hitting 8-for-12 with one home run, one double and two RBIs. Both contests took place at Logan Field in Seattle on the campus of Seattle U.

SEATTLE - Seattle U softball claimed its second straight Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series victory on Saturday, taking both games of the doubleheader over Sam Houston with final scores of 11-5 and 6-3. Olivia Viggiano enjoyed a fabulous weekend at the plate, hitting 8-for-12 with one home run, one double and two RBIs. Both contests took place at Logan Field in Seattle on the campus of Seattle U. 

With the two victories, the Redhawks improve to an impressive 24-11 with a 5-4 record in WAC play. 

GAME ONE

Seattle U took the first game thanks to a seven run fifth inning that was capped off by a Katie Walling grand slam. With a 3-2 count, Walling crushed a ball over the left field fence to put the Redhawks in front by six. This is the Redhawks second grand slam of the season as Jocelynn De La Cruz clobbered a game winning grand slam against Minnesota earlier in the season.

Olivia Viggiano and Tai Wilson opened the inning with singles before Madison Kahwaty walked to load the bases with no outs. De La Cruz hit the ball hard to third, allowing Viggiano to beat the throw home and tie the game at five all. Sydney Frankenberger was responsible for sending home the run that ended up deciding the game, grounding out to second base for an RBI. Ava Sin doubled the lead with an RBI single through the right side, before Walling came to the plate. 

Kalyn Hill started the comeback effort in the fourth inning, cranking a three run home run to left center field. Kahwaty opened the inning with a single up the middle before Frankenberger reached on a single through the left side two batters later.

Grace Luderer picked up the win, improving to 7-2 overall on the season. Luderer was stellar after coming in out of the bullpen, allowing no earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Luderer ended the game sitting down nine of 11 Bearkats hitters. 

GAME ONE SCORING SUMMARY

  • First Inning: Sam Houston scored two runs on five hits. Jocelynn De La Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to center field. 
  • Second Inning: The Bearkats scored one run on a single to left field. 
  • Fourth Inning: Sam Houston scored one run on one hit. Kalyn Hill hit a three run home run to left center field. 
  • Fifth Inning: De La Cruz singled to third, tying the game. Sydney Frankenberger grounded out to second base, allowing SU to take the lead. Ava Sin singled through the right side, scoring another. Katie Walling hit a grand slam to left field. 
GAME TWO

Olivia Viggiano opened this contest with her first career home run, placing a ball into left field and flying around the bases for the inside-the-parker. Stephanie Merwin was the last Redhawk to hit an inside-the-park home run, doing so in a 9-6 win over Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, on April 10, 2021.

After the Bearkats took a one run lead in the fourth, Seattle U immediately got back in front in the bottom half scoring four runs. Ava Sin got a two out rally started with a double to left center before Katie Walling slapped a ball just over the pitchers head for an infield single. Lily Garcia started a trend of doubles, knocking a ball down the left field line to score two to retake the lead. Viggiano followed with an identical double to score Garcia and Tai Wilson crushed a ball to right center for the third consecutive double.

Kalyn Hill added an insurance run in the fifth, smoking a ball to left center that allowed Sydney Frankenberger to score after she reached on a bunt single and got into scoring position on an error by the pitcher. 

Stefanie Madrigal grabbed her 12th win of the season, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts. After allowing two runners on in the first, Madrigal sent down nine straight Bearkats. The San Jose, Calif., native had her swing and miss stuff working today, with all four strikeouts being via swinging. 

GAME TWO SCORING SUMMARY
  • First Inning: Olivia Viggiano hit a solo home run.
  • Fourth Inning: Sam Houston scored two runs on two hits. Lily Garcia doubled down the left field line, putting SU ahead by one. Viggiano doubled down the left field line, scoring Garcia. Wilson doubled to right center field, scoring Viggiano. 
  • Fifth Inning: Kalyn Hill singled to left center, allowing the sixth and final Redhawk to score. 
  • Sixth Inning: The Bearkats scored one run on a double. 
The Redhawks will head to the road next weekend, traveling to St. George, Utah, for a three game series with Utah Tech opening with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. pacific time.
