PHOENIX, AZ. - Seattle U baseball made it back-to-back wins over GCU, taking game two of their series, 5-2, Friday night in Arizona. After a slow start to the game from both sides, the Redhawk offense ignited late to secure their first series win over the Lopes since 2016.
Grand Canyon scored the first and only run of the game through the first five innings, as neither offense seemed to carry over the momentum from last night's high scoring affair. Seattle U would even the score in the top of the 6th on a solo home run from Matt Boissoneault (4), one of his three hits on the night.
The solo shot seemed to be the spark that the Redhawk bats needed, as they scored two runs in the 7th on RBIs from Trevor Antonson and Hudson Shupe, before Shupe picked up another run with a double in the 8th. Just like that, the Redhawks had the 5-1 lead.
"What a great game," said head coach Donny Harrel. "Big blast from Boissoneault to get our offense to believe we could get to Thornton and then Shupe's big double really ignited life into the dugout."
The awakening of the offense paired nicely with an excellent start on the mound from Peter Chronowski. The lefty tossed a gem, going 6 1/3 while scattering eight hits and giving up no earned runs, for his second win of the season. Luke Alwood and Mason Hoover would both be called on out of the pen to finish the game off, with Hoover recording his first save of the season. The Redhawk pitchers only allowed one earned run in the entire game, going on to take game two, 5-2.
"Both starters were locked in, and Chronowski held tough right to when he hit his pitch count," Harrel added of his starter. "Alwood pitched out of the big jam and so happy for senior Mason Hoover who came in to shut the door. Huge series win for our team and especially the seniors."
With the win, the Redhawks improved to 9-18 on the season and are now 7-7 in conference play. They have also now taken three of their last four conference series, and their first over the Lopes in Arizona.
Now with a chance to pick up their first sweep of the season, Seattle U prepares for game three of the series tomorrow, April 8. Blake Smith gets the call with first pitch scheduled for 12pm PT.
