Bellevue, Wash. - Seattle U baseball cruised to a home opening win over UC Davis, 11-1, Friday afternoon at Bannerwood Park. Peter Chronowski continued his hot start to the season and the bats warmed up on the rainy day as the Redhawks took game 1 of the series.
"Well number one we saw Peter Chronowski be pretty good again and that's three consecutive quality starts for him," said head coach Donny Harrel. "27 hitters is the minimum you can face for baseball, and we faced 32 tonight so obviously between what Peter did and Leaverton coming in during the ninth and punching out the side it gives us momentum going into tomorrow."
Chronowski picked up his first win of the season, going eight innings while only allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out six. Blake Leaverton came in for the top of the 9th and struck out the side to secure the win for the Redhawks.
Not to be lost in the pitching, the offense warmed up as the game went on and put the first runs on the board in the 4th. They would score at least a run in four of the last five innings as they out hit the Aggies 10-3.
Ryne Hays and Grant Heiser both recorded multi-hit games, with Heiser driving in three of the Redhawks 11 runs. At the top of the order, Trevor Antonson and Hudson Shupe extended their hitting streak to start the season, now recording a hit in all seven games thus far.
""I thought we were patient tonight," coach Harrel added of the offensive output. "We got some key hits that haven't necessarily happened in some of our earlier series."
The Redhawks will square off with the Aggies in game 2 of the series tomorrow, with Nestor German set to make his third start of the season on the hill. First pitch for that game has been moved up to 12pm PT from its original 2pm time due to weather in the forecast.
