Seattle U Splits Doubleheader of WAC Opening Series

SEATTLE – Seattle U softball split with Tarleton in the opening doubleheader of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play on Friday, coming back to win the first game, 12-5, before dropping the evening matchup, 3-7. Senior Madison Kahwaty had a great day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and one RBI. Both contests took place at Logan Field on the campus of Seattle U.

SEATTLE – Seattle U softball split with Tarleton in the opening doubleheader of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play on Friday, coming back to win the first game, 12-5, before dropping the evening matchup, 3-7. Senior Madison Kahwaty had a great day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and one RBI. Both contests took place at Logan Field on the campus of Seattle U.

The Redhawks move to an impressive 20-8 after today's results. 

GAME ONE

After finding themselves trailing by five runs, Seattle U got the comeback started in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Kalyn Hill smoked a ball to center field for her first home run of the year, putting SU on the board.

The Redhawks tied it up in the third, scoring four runs on three hits. Tai Wilson and Madison Kahwaty got on base with back-to-back walks before Jocelynn De La Cruz knocked a single back up the middle to score Wilson. Four batters later, Lily Garcia singled to left center field, bringing the Redhawks within one with runners on second and third and only one out. Katie Walling would get the job done in the very next at bat, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the ball game. 

The Redhawks completed the comeback effort in the fourth, taking a one run lead they would never relinquish. Sydney Frankenberger showed some clutch two out hitting, singling up the middle to score Kahwaty who had doubled two batter before. Seattle U added three insurances runs in both the fifth and sixth for the seven run victory. Wilson and Kahwaty hit back-to-back doubles to do the damage in the fifth, while Olivia Viggiano slapped a two out single up the middle to score the final two runs of the game in the sixth.

Stefanie Madrigal improved to 10-4 with the victory, throwing a complete game with one strikeout. After starting the afternoon slowly, Madrigal found her groove in the third. The senior sent the Texans down in order in the third and finished the game with nine straight outs. 

GAME ONE SCORING SUMMARY

  • First Inning: Tarleton scored four runs on three hits. 
  • Second Inning: The Texans added another on one hit. Kalyn Hill homered to center field.
  • Third Inning: Jocelynn De La Cruz singled up the middle, scoring the opening run of the inning. Madison Kahwaty scored on a wild pitch. Lily Garcia singled to left center, allowing the third run of the inning to score. Katie Walling hit a sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game at five. 
  • Fourth Inning: Sydney Frankenberger singled up the middle, putting the Redhawks ahead.
  • Fifth Inning: Tai WIlson doubled to right center, allowing two to score. Kahwaty followed with a double to left center, scoring Wilson.
  • Sixth Inning: Brooke Milder scored on an error by the pitcher. Olivia Viggiano singled, scoring the final two runs of the game. 
GAME TWO

Seattle U took the lead in the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Viggiano opened the game with a single to left field and scored two batters latter on another single by Kahwaty. De La Cruz immediately followed with a double to right center, putting SU ahead by two. The Redhawks scored one more in the second after Viggiano knocked her second straight hit, putting the ball up the middle to allow Garcia to score. 

Naomi Chaidez was phenomenal in a relief appearance, allowing just one hit across 3.1 scoreless innings. Chaidez didn't allow a Texan to get on base over the last six batters. 

GAME TWO SCORING SUMMARY
  • First Inning: Madison Kahwaty singled, scoring the opening run. Jocelynn De La Cruz doubled to right center, allowing Kahwaty to score.
  • Second Inning: Olivia Viggiano singled up the middle, scoring another run.
  • Third Inning: Tarleton scored three on three hits.
  • Fourth Inning: The Texans scored four on five hits. 
Seattle U will compete for the series win on Saturday, taking on Tarleton in the third and final game of the weekend at Logan Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
