Bellevue, Wash. - Seattle U baseball dropped their series opener vs Utah Valley, 1-5, Friday night at Bannerwood Park. The Wolverines jumped out to a lead early as the Redhawks couldn't rally in game 1 of the 3-game conference series.
"Very disappointing night for our offense," said head coach Donny Harrel. "We never put any pressure on their starter and could not get innings going."
After trailing 0-3 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning, the Redhawks were able to tally a run courtesy of a Cole Kleckner (2-for-3) RBI single that brought in Grant Heiser and cut the deficit to just two. Unfortunately, that would be lone run of the game for SU as Utah Valley would add one run in the 8th and 9th on their way to the series opening win.
In his 5th start of the season, Peter Chronowski (1-3) went six innings and gave up three earned runs while striking out three. Luke Alwood came in for relief to start the 7th, giving up two runs and striking out three as well. Sam Hanson and Mason Hoover would split the final inning for the Redhawks pitching staff, combining to give up no runs.
"Chronowski kept us in the game," Harrel added. "We need to play better defense tomorrow and find a way to score some runs."
Seattle U will look to even the series tomorrow, March 18, with Nestor German slotted for his 5th start of the season. First pitch from Bannerwood is scheduled for 2pm PT and will be broadcast live on WAC International.
