SEATTLE – Seattle U softball split on the final day of the Seattle U Invite, opening with a run rule win against Montana (8-0) before falling to UNLV (7-8) in 11 innings. Sophomore Tai Wilson continued a phenomenal weekend, going 4-for-8 over the two games with one double and one RBI. Both contests took place at Logan Field on the campus of Seattle U.
The Redhawks move to 19-6 after the day's results, continuing a historic start to the 2023 season. The morning win against the Grizzles marked six straight.
GAME ONE
The Redhawks were dominate in this contest, shutting out the Grizzles and walking it off in the sixth via the run rule.
Jasmine Wehn got the scoring started in the second, hitting an infield single to the shortstop. SU broke this game wide open in the fourth, scoring five runs. Sydney Frankenberger and Lily Garcia hit back-to-back singles to put runners on before Ava Sin smacked a single up the middle to score two runs. Wehn immediately followed with an RBI double to right center to make it 4-0 at that point. Later in the inning, Olivia Viggiano added another on a single through the right side, while Tai Wilson capped off the inning with an RBI double to center field.
Jocelynn De La Cruz opened the fifth with a solo home run for her team leading eighth of the year and ended the game in the sixth with a bases loaded RBI single.
Naomi Chaidez was stellar on the mound, throwing five innings with one strikeout and only allowing three hits. After allowing the first two runners on in the first, Chaidez recorded three straight outs to get out of the jam. GAME ONE SCORING SUMMARY
- Second Inning: Jasmine Wehn singled to shortstop, scoring the first run of the game.
- Fourth Inning: Ava Sin singled, allowing two runs to score. Wehn doubled to right center field for another run. Olivia Viggiano singled through the right side, scoring the fifth run of the inning. Tai Wilson doubled to center field, allowing Viggiano to score.
- Fifth Inning: Jocelynn De La Cruz hit a solo home run.
- Sixth Inning: De La Cruz singled through the right side, ending the game via the run rule.
Seattle U opened this contest with three runs in the first inning. Tai Wilson got aboard on a walk, followed by a Madison Kahwaty single that put runners on second and third. Jocelynn De La Cruz put the first run across the plate, knocking a single through the left side. Lily Garcia would hit a sacrifice fly to double the lead and De La Cruz would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch.
After UNLV tied it in the top of the fifth, the Redhawks retook the lead quickly in the bottom half. Wilson started the inning with a single through the right side before Kahwaty walked to put runners on base. Much like the first inning, De La Cruz followed with a clutch single to put SU back in front. Mekenzie Madokoro would double the lead shortly after, hitting an infield single to the shortstop where Brooklyn Jones did a fantastic job of avoiding the tag.

UNLV tied the ball game in the seventh and the contest would go scoreless for the first two innings of extras. Even with the Rebels grabbing the lead in the 10th, Seattle U never quit, scoring the tying run on a Kalyn Hill two out single through the left side.
Stefanie Madrigal was a workhorse in the circle, throwing 9.2 innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. Madrigal opened this contest with some stellar work, throwing four shutout innings. The San Jose, California, native reentered the game in the top of the seventh and struck out consecutive batters to keep it tied. With a base runner starting on second due to international extra innings rules, Madrigal was able to hold the Rebels scoreless in both the eighth and ninth.
GAME TWO SCORING SUMMARY
- First Inning: De La Cruz singled, scoring the games first run. Lily Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to double the lead. De La Cruz scored on a wild pitch.
- Fifth Inning: UNLV scored three runs on four hits. De La Cruz singled, allowing SU to retake the lead. Mekenzie Madokoro hit an infield single, putting the Redhawks up two.
- Sixth Inning: The Rebels scored one run on one hit. Kahwaty hits a fielder's choice, putting SU back up two.
- Seventh Inning: UNLV scored two runs on two hits.
- 10th Inning: UNLV scored on a wild pitch. Kalyn Hill singled through the left side to tie the game.
- 11th Inning: The Rebels scored the winning run on one hit.
