Huntsville, TX - Seattle U baseball dropped their 2023 Western Athletic Conference opener to Sam Houston, 3-7, Friday night in Huntsville. The Redhawks had a rally going in the 8th but couldn't dig out of the hole as they dropped game 1 of the 3-game series with the Bearkats.
Redhawks struck first in the ballgame on a solo HR from Grant Heiser (2) in the top of the 2nd to take the 1-0 lead. Sam Houston would respond by putting up seven runs between the 3rd and 5th and would take a 6-run lead into the 8th inning.
Seattle U started to mount a comeback in the top of the 8th when Michael Tsoukalas hit a single up the middle bringing Andrew Wong home. A couple batters later Cameron Dayton doubled down the left field line as Tsoukalas scored from second. The Redhawks would eventually load the bases and threatened to score more in the inning but could cut into the deficit no more, eventually falling to Sam Houston after a scoreless 9th, 3-7.
Peter Chronowski (1-2) made his 4th start of the season, going five innings and giving up four earned runs. Kaden Alberghini made his second appearance out of the bullpen, coming in during the 6th and going the remainder of the game. He would maintain his team low 0.00 ERA as he did not allow a run over the final three innings.
The loss drops the Redhawks to 2-9, as they look to bounce back in game 2 of the series tomorrow, March 11. Nestor German (1-2) is scheduled to get his 4th start of the season on the hill with first pitched scheduled for 1pm PT.
