SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball winning streak came to a close on Thursday evening, falling to Sam Houston, 60-67, at home on National Women in Sports Night. The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matchup took place at the Redhawk Center in Seattle.
Sam Houston came out of the gates quickly, scoring 10 of the first 13 points. The Redhawks spent the majority of the first quarter and beginning of the second fighting their way back into the game, taking the lead on an Irena Korolenko three-pointer midway through the second. Back-and-forth scoring by both teams had the Redhawks only down one at halftime.
Seattle U would push a head with four minutes left in the third after a six-zero run that was capped off by an Asta Blauenfeldt fast break layup. However, the Bearkats would take a commanding lead after that, finishing the third quarter on a 12-2 run. Sam Houston would retain that lead throughout the fourth quarter, reaching as large as 12 with the Redhawks getting it to as close as four at one point.
"Early foul trouble hindered us tonight," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. " We were unable to run through our rotation how we would have normally liked but we battled through that adversity and put forth a good effort."
Sam Houston's Madelyn Batista recorded the sole double-double of the evening, scoring 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds, while Chyna Allen chipped in 19 of her own.
The Redhawks had another very balanced scoring evening, with three players finishing in double figures. Sophomore Taliyah Clark lead the way with 12 points, while junior Irena Korolenko and freshman Lisa Michaelsen both logged 11 and freshman Asta Baluenfeldt chipped in nine.
Clark finished with six steals in this matchup, marking a new career-high, while Michaelsen's 11 points is also a new career-best.
"Lisa was a nice boost on the inside tonight," said Barcomb. "She provided us with a much needed inside presence."
Seattle U will have the weekend off before celebrating Kids Day next Thursday morning at 11 a.m. against Tarleton in the Redhawk Center
