Long Beach, CA - Seattle U baseball split a doubleheader matchup with Long Beach State on Monday. After shutting out the Dirtbags in game one of the doubleheader, the Redhawks dropped game two and the series.

"We finallly played really good baseball in all aspects of the game for our win today but could not repeat it in game two" said head coach Donny Harrel. "We are still learning and giving great effort, but our play and production on both sides of the plate needs to improve."

GAME 1

Nestor German and Blake Smith combined to shutout the Dirtbags in game one of the series. German, who picked up his first win of the season, went six innings and struck out six batters while only giving up two hits and no runs. Smith came in during the bottom of the 7th, gave up no runs on five hits with four strikeouts, and was given the 9-out save in relief.

Offensive standouts in game one included Grant Heiser who knocked in three runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate, Matt Boissoneault who went 2-for-2 with an rbi and Ryne Hays going 3-for-4.

The biggest news from the game one was head coach Donny Harrel reached his 500th career win. Harrel, who compiled 220 wins at Lane Community College in Oregon, now has 280 wins since being named skipper of the Redhawk program in 2010.

"Reaching 500 wins is very humbling and it makes you realize how many great players and coaches you have had in your life that contribute to all those wins, said coach Harrel. "I feel very blessed to reach 500 and hope there are many more to come."

GAME 2

After getting the win in game one, the Redhawks quickly found themselves behind in game two. Long Beach State scored three runs in the first inning and scored at least two runs over the next four as they took the series.

Despite the loss, Jackson Reed had a big performance going 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.

The Redhawks will have just one day off before they travel to Portland to battle the Pilots on Wednesday. First pitch from the Rose City is scheduled for 3pm PT, with the game being streamed live on WCCsports.com
