FRESNO, Calif. – Seattle U softball opened its second tournament of the 2023 season on Friday, claiming two victories. The Redhawks took down UIC, 10-2, in the first game of the day before posting a comeback victory over the hosts, Fresno State. Both nonconference contests took place at the Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno, California.
The two victories on Friday improve the Redhawks record to 5-2 on the season.
GAME ONE
Seattle U got off to another fast start, scoring at least one run in the first inning for the fourth time this season. Tai Wilson hit her first triple of the season, scoring the game's first run, before Madison Kahwaty scored Wilson on a sac fly to center field.
The Redhawks broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five runs in the inning. Lily Garcia got the momentum started with her first triple of the year, scoring on the same play thanks to an error from the second baseman. Shortly after, Kahwaty would record her second home run of the season to make it 7-0 through four.
Amanda Morris ended this game in the bottom of the sixth, recording her first career home run with a three-run shot.
Stefanie Madrigal picked up her third win of the season, throwing five scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
GAME ONE SCORING
- First Inning: Tai Wilson tripled to center, scoring the game's first run. Madison Kahwaty hit a sac fly to center field to score Wilson, making it 2-0 after one.
- Fourth Inning: Lily Garcia triples to right field, allowing the runner on first to score and she would score on an error from the second baseman. Olivia Viggiano would ground out, scoring Katie Walling. Kahwaty added a two-run home run to increase it to five scored in the inning.
- Sixth Inning: UIC would score their only two runs of the game in the top of the inning. Amanda Morris hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
GAME TWO
The Redhawks would score in the opening inning once more after Jocelynn De La Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
Finding themselves down 2-1 after five, Seattle U would record four runs in the sixth inning to retake the lead. Kalyn Hill got the rally started with a hard hit double to right center field, tying the game at two all. On the very next pitch, Lily Garcia would rip a ball into center field, putting SU back in front for good.
Grace Luderer earns the win, improving her record to 2-1 on the season. Stefanie Madrigal earned her second save of the season, striking out two in her 1.2 innings.
GAME TWO SCORING
- First Inning: Jocelynn De La Cruz hits a sacrific fly to center field, scoring the first run of the game.
- Second Inning: The Bulldogs recorded two hits and tied the game at one.
- Third Inning: Fresno State took a one run lead off a home run.
- Sixth Inning: Kalyn Hill doubled to right center, allowing the first run of the inning to score and tying the game. Lily Garcia singles to center field, scoring the go ahead run. Jasmine Wehn pinch hit and knocked a single to center field, forcing another run home off a throwing error. Katie Walling scores the fourth run of the inning and final run of the game on a wild pitch.
