Victor Among Sports Leader of the Year Nominees

SEATTLE – Seattle U men's basketball head coach Chris Victor is among six area coaches and managers among the nominees for Sports Leader of the Year Award presented by Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, as part of the 88th Annual Sports Star of the Year Awards Show and announced Tuesday by the Seattle Sports Commission.

SEATTLE – Seattle U men's basketball head coach Chris Victor is among six area coaches and managers nominated for the Sports Leader of the Year Award presented by Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, as part of the 88th Annual Sports Star of the Year Awards Show and announced Tuesday by the Seattle Sports Commission.

The nominees include four professional team leaders – Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks), Laura Harvey (OL Reign), Noelle Quinn (Seattle Storm) and Scott Servais (Seattle Mariners) – and two collegiate coaches – Kalen DeBoer (Washington Football) and Victor.

With an emphasis on the exceptional guidance of coaching staff across the region, the Sports Star Nominations Committee and Sports Commission Executive Advisory Board identified the six nominees for Sports Leader of the Year. Honorees and award recipients are selected by the Sports Star Nominations Committee, composed of local sports historians, media, and industry colleagues. Winners be announced live during the 88th Annual Sports Star of the Year Awards Show, which takes place on February 28 at the Westin Hotel in Seattle.

Taking the helm of the program as interim head coach days before the 2021-22 season began, Victor led the Redhawks to their first ever Western Athletic Conference regular season title and a 23-9 overall record. The run through the 2021-22 season included a 9-4 non-conference record, 17-2 home record and a nine-game win streak that included an 8-0 start to WAC play for the first time in 10 years competing in the league. Victor's Redhawks took just 26 games to reach 20 wins, marking the 15th 20-win season in program history. The 23-win marker was last achieved in 1957-58 and is the most wins by a Seattle U coach in their first season. Victor was named Head Coach on March 1, 2022.

Twenty-six games into the 2022-23 season, the Redhawks are 18-8 overall, 9-4 in WAC play, have been ranked as high as 61 in the NET rankings and received votes in the Jan. 23 USA TODAY Sports Men's Basketball Coaches Poll, the first-ever appearance in the Coaches Poll and first recognition in a Division I national poll since the 1964-65 season.

Seattle U next travels to Riverside, Calif., for a Wednesday, Feb. 15 match-up at California Baptist. Tip of from the CBU Events Center is 7 p.m.
