Redhawks Split Pair of Close Games in Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Seattle U softball continued its opening weekend on Saturday, falling to Rutgers, 5-8, before defeating Santa Clara, 4-1. Both contests took place at the La Rue Field in Davis, California.

DAVIS, Calif. – Seattle U softball continued its opening weekend on Saturday, falling to Rutgers, 5-8, before defeating Santa Clara, 4-1. Both contests took place at the La Rue Field in Davis, California.

GAME ONE

The Redhawks fought their way back in this contest, scoring three runs over the fourth and fifth inning to tie up the game going into the bottom fifth. Rutgers would proceed to score four in the bottom of the inning to put this game away. 

The trio of graduate students Jocelynn De La Cruz, Olivia Viggiano and redshirt freshman Katie Walling all had two hits games with one RBI each. 

 
GAME ONE SCORING
  • First Inning: Rutgers takes an early lead, scoring on a bases loaded walk.
  • Second Inning: Seattle U would tie the game up, with Mekenzie Madokoro scoring on a wild pitch. Rutgers would take the lead once more, hitting a three-run homer to left field. 
  • Fourth Inning: Jocelynn De La Cruz would pull a run back, hitting an RBI double to score Tai Wilson
  • Fifth Inning: The Redhawks would tie the game at four in the top of the inning, thanks to a home run from Katie Walling followed by an RBI single from Olivia Viggiano. Rutgers would take a four run lead after five through an RBI single, RBI double and a two RBI single to center field.
  • Seventh Inning: Tai Wilson would hit an RBI single to left center, scoring Katie Walling.
GAME TWO

Seattle U was out in front for the majority of the game, taking a one run lead in first inning. Santa Clara would do its best to get back in the game, hitting a home run in the sixth to make it a one run ball game. Madison Kahwaty's first home run of the season in the bottom half of the sixth followed by a Katie Walling RBI single pushed the lead out of reach. 

Sophomore Grace Luderer was phenomenal in the circle, scattering three hits across six innings and only conceding one run. Senior Stefanie Madrigal struck out the side in the top of the seventh, earning her second career save. 
 
GAME TWO SCORING
  • First Inning: Jocelynn De La Cruz hits a sac fly to center field, scoring Tai Wilson
  • Fifth Inning: Olivia Viggiano doubles the lead on a single to center field, scoring Brooke Milder. 
  • Sixth Inning: Santa Clara gets one back in the top of the sixth on a home run. Madison Kahwaty would hit her first home run of the year in the bottom half, before Katie Walling hits a single that scores Lily Garcia. 

Seattle U will conclude play at the NorCal Kickoff on Sunday, taking on Sacramento State in Sacramento, California, at noon with streaming on ESPN+.
