ARLINGTON, Texas - Seattle U softball's Madison Kahwaty, Stefanie Madrigal and Olivia Viggiano have all been named to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) 2023 Preseason Team. In addition to the individual honors, the Redhawks were picked to finish second overall, receiving 109 overall picks, just 11 behind leaders Grand Canyon.

This is the second consecutive year the Redhawks have had three players named to the Preseason All-WAC Team. They have gone six straight seasons with multiple players earning the honor and have had at least one athlete named for the last decade. Only the 2020 season did the Redhawks have more individuals earn Preseason All-WAC honors when five were selected.

Senior Madison Kahwaty's first season in red and black was a stellar one, earning WAC All-Tournament, All-Defensive and All-Academic. The native of Livermore, California, was an important member of SU's lineup in 2022, starting in 53 contests and finishing second on the team in average (.305), OPS (.962), home runs (eight), doubles (10) and total bases (83). Kahwaty set the single game doubles record (three) and tied the school record for most hits (four) during the season opener against Western Michigan on Feb. 11, 2022.

Fellow senior Stefanie Madrigal earns the honor for the second consecutive year after claiming Second Team All-WAC in 2022. Madrigal was Seattle U's top pitcher for most of the season, finishing second in ERA (2.22) and fourth in wins (15) in the conference, logging the most innings pitched (135.2) and complete games (12) on the squad. The San Jose, California, native has already accomplished a lot in her time at SU, including 2021 All-WAC First Team and WAC Pitcher of the Week three times.

Much like Madrigal, graduate student Olivia Viggiano makes the team for the second consecutive season after being named to the NFCA All-Region Third Team, WAC All-Defensive and WAC All-Academic in 2022. The 5-6 outfielder was an integral part of the Seattle U lineup, starting all 56 games and leading the team in average (.317), at-bats (183), and hits (58). The native of Mission Viejo, California, will look to break multiple SU DI records this season as she is currently tied for the first all-time in triples (11) and holds the second overall spot in stolen bases (48), fifth spot in at-bats (610) and seventh spot in hits (190). Viggiano has already broke the all-time runs scored record which was set at 123 by Kaylee Ree in 2018.

Seattle U will open the 2023 season on Friday Feb. 10 at the NorCal Kickoff, beginning with Pacific at 9:30 a.m. and ending with UC Davis at 12 p.m. in Davis, California.
