EDINBURG, Texas — Cameron Tyson led all scorers with 27 points and Seattle U men's basketball overcame a rough offensive night to hang on for a 66-64 Western Athletic Conference win at UTRGV Thursday night.

With the hard-fought victory, the Redhawks improve to 2-0 in WAC play and 11-4 on the season.

Nothing came easy for Seattle U, who shot 35 percent from the field and were just 7-of-35 from three and 7-of-14 from the charity stripe.

Trailing by five, 59-54, following a pair of Dayton Williams free throws for UTRGV, Riley Grigsby scored through a foul and converted the and-one free throw to make it a two-point game with 3:36 remaining.

The teams would go scoreless on the next five combined possessions before Tyson snatched an offensive rebound, dribbled back out to the three-point line and hurried his fifth triple of the night for a 60-59 Redhawk lead.

Sherman Brashear answered for the Vaqueros, knocking down a triple of his own, before Alex Schumacher sank a pair of free throws to knot the score at 62-all. Following a UTRGV called timeout and empty possession, Schumacher converted a driving layup with 44 ticks to go, then sank two more free throws with 21 second remaining to make it a four-point game.

Justin Johnson got two back for UTRGV and Matthew Levis missed a pair of free throws that would have sealed the game. But two last ditch attempts by UTRGV would not fall and the Redhawks prevailed.

Schumacher joined Tyson in double figures, finishing with 16 points. Brandton Chatfield chipped in seven points and 11 boards. Emeka Udenyi added six points, six assists and 10 rebounds.

Seattle U led 19-14 before a 13-0 UTRGV run made it 27-19 with 2:47 in the first half. Riley Grigsby hit a floater to halt the dry sleep and Tyson hit a pair of threes to make it 29-27 Vaqueros at the half.

The Redhawks wrap up the first of three trips to Texas on Saturday, traveling north to face new WAC member UT Arlington. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. Central Time.
