SEATTLE – On the heels of their eighth straight win, including a 7-0 start to Western Athletic Conference play, Seattle U men's basketball is among the teams receiving votes in the latest USA TODAY Sports Men's Basketball Coaches Poll, released Jan. 23.
The four votes in the Jan. 23 poll marks the Redhawks first-ever appearance in the Coaches Poll and first recognition in a Division I national poll since the 1964-65 season.
Seattle U has been rolling in recent weeks, beginning their current streak on Christmas Day in Hawaii with a big win over George Washington to close out play at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. The squad has since been perfect in WAC play, including an 85-80 win at Utah Valley that represented the first-ever Quad 1 win and gave the Redhawks sole possession of first place in the league standings. Most recently they shut down the nation's top scoring team, Southern Utah, holding the Thunderbirds 27.5 points below their average in an 81-60 win in Seattle.
At 16-4 overall and 7-0 in WAC play, the Redhawks head back out on the road this week, traveling to Huntsville, Texas, on Thursday to face Sam Houston, which will represent the highest NET ranked opponent so far this season (currently No. 51 in games through Jan. 23). The road trip concludes at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, on Saturday.
