SEATTLE – Seattle U men's basketball broke open a two-point game with a 20-5 run to start the second half against Tarleton, cruising to a 67-47 Western Athletic Conference win Thursday night at the Redhawk Center.
The Redhawks' current win streak extended to seven straight while they remained perfect in WAC play at 6-0 and 15-4 overall on the season. The Texans dropped to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in league games.
Four Redhawks scored in double figures, paced by 13 each from Alex Schumacher and Riley Grigsby. Schumacher finished with a trio of threes and Grigsby shot an efficient 6-for-9. Cameron Tyson scored all 12 of his points in the final 10 minutes of play and Paris Dawson added 11, including 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Freddy Hicks and Lue Williams had 14 points each to lead Tarleton.
A gritty first half saw the teams stay close throughout. Seattle U's largest lead of the frame was seven, but Tarleton would stay right in it and the teams headed to the locker rooms with the Redhawks up by just two, 24-22.
But the Redhawks began to find their offensive flow in the second half as Emeka Udenyi scored a pair of buckets and Grigsby converted a jumper following a Texan turnover.
A corner three from Matthew Levis at the 12:36 mark extended the Redhawk lead to nine, 33-24, and forced a Tarleton timeout. The Texans' halted the spurt with a Shamir Bogues layup, but the Redhawks followed with a 9-0 run, ballooning the lead to 16.
"Tarleton is a tough team," said Head Coach Chris Victor. "They compete and they play really well defensively. It took us a while to get into rhythm because they had us playing a little fast offensively. Our jump shots were out of rhythm, we couldn't get anything to the rim, we were struggling. We started to settle in in the second half and got some shots to fall. And at the end of the day, our defense was the reason we were able to separate. Holding them to 25 points in the second half was big."
Tarleton would trim the lead down to 12 with just over seven minutes to play, but a Dawson three and five straight points by Tyson balled the lead to 20 a the 5:43 mark.
Seattle U help the Texans to just 8-of-28 from the field (28.6%) in the second frame and 32.1% shooting on the night. The Texans also managed just 1-of-19 from three.
The Redhawks won the rebounding battle 43-31, including nine offensive boards.
Saturday brings another tough test to town as the Redhawks host Southern Utah (15-5, 6-1 WAC) in a 3 p.m. tip at the Redhawk Center.
