HUNTSVILLE, Tex. - Seattle U women's basketball began Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play on Thursday evening, falling to Sam Houston, 72-92. The matchup took place at the Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas.
The Redhawks opened the game strongly, taking a 14-3 lead after four and half minutes. However, Sam Houston would pull away in the second quarter, outscoring Seattle U 23-2 in the last eight minutes of the half.
"We played three quarters of good basketball but our second quarter performance let us down in the end," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb.
Sam Houston's Kaylee Jefferson scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Sam Houston's advantage of 24-7 in second chance points and 28-12 in points off turnovers lead to their victory.
Junior Peyton Howard lead the Redhawks once more, scoring 14 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sophomore Julianna Walker and freshman Noemie Bariteau both added 12, while sophomore Taliyah Clark's 10 marked the fourth Redhawk in double digit scoring.
"Peyton continues to play strong and got some much needed support from Taliyah," said Barcomb. "It was also great to see Noemie give us a nice spark off the bench."
Fellow sophomore Kari Kyrkjebo logged a team-high 11 rebounds, posting a new career-high.
Seattle U concludes it's trip to Texas with UTRGV on Saturday, Dec. 31, in Edinburg at 12 p.m. pacific time.
