HONOLULU – On a quick turnaround and with a shortened bench, Seattle U men's basketball rallied once from a 14-point deficit against Iona, but could not duplicate the effort down the stretch, dropping an 83-72 final to the Gaels at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Friday afternoon.

Cameron Tyson finished with a game-high 27 points and Alex Schumacher surpassed 1,000 points for his collegiate career early in the second half on his way to a 17-point effort. Brandton Chatfield chipped in 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including a pair of threes, before fouling out late in the game.

The Gaels (8-4) were paced by Nelly Joseph's 26 points. Daniss Jenkins had 19 and Osborn Shema added 11.

A slow start yet again for the Redhawk offense saw the Gaels run off to a 16-2 start just five minutes into the game. But Seattle U (8-4) utilized its defensive pressure and Gael turnovers to start chipping away. Trailing 29-19 with 4:52 left in the half, the Redhawks closed out the frame with 10 straight points to knot the score at intermission.

Despite the furious comeback early, Iona would open the second half in similar fashion as the first, matching their largest lead of the game at 50-36 with 13:44 to play.

Four consecutive free throws got the Redhawks within seven, 56-49, with 9:40 to go, but they would get no closer.

A foul heavy second half saw the teams combine to shoot 58 free throws. After going just 4-for-10 in the first, Seattle U went 28-for-35 in the second. The Redhawks managed just 29 percent field goal shooting and 6-of-24 from three on the day.

Tournament play concludes on Christmas Day as Seattle U (8-4) faces the loser of tonight's George Washington versus Pepperdine match-up. Tip-off Sunday is set for 8:30 a.m. local time, 10:30 a.m. Pacific on ESPNU.
