HONOLULU – Seattle U men's basketball could not slow a potent Utah State offense that leads the nation in effective field goal percentage as the Aggies ran away with an 84-56 win in the Redhawks' opening game of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Thursday afternoon in the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Redhawks (8-3) held the Aggies (10-1) to just 30 percent shooting from three in the first half (4-of-13), but could not combat that on the offensive end themselves, shooting just 1-of-14 from beyond the arc in the first and 5-of-29 for the game.
Cameron Tyson paced Seattle U with 20 points, including four threes. Riley Grigsby added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Utah State had five players in double figures, led by Steven Ashworth's 17. Dan Akin had 15, Sean Bairstow added 13 points, Max Shulga had 12 and Taylor Funk added 11.
Trailing 36-24 at the break, Tyson opened the second with five points to help make it a nine-point game, 38-29. But a 10-0 Aggie run quickly pushed the spread to 19 and the Redhawks never narrowed the gap in the runaway win for USU.
Seattle U will look to right its ship on a quick turnaround as it faces Iona on Friday at 11:30 a.m. local time, 1:30 p.m. Pacific.
