LA JOLLA, Calif. – Seattle U women's basketball concluded nonconference play on Wednesday, falling to UC San Diego, 56-61, in a tightly contested matchup. Junior Peyton Howard set a career-high in points for the second time in three game, scoring 21 on the afternoon. The final nonconference game of the season was played at the LionTree Arena in La Jolla, California.

"Another wire to wire contest where we just weren't able to come out on the other end," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. " I thought when Irena tied it at 54 that we were going to be able to pull this one out. We did a great job of taking Sydney Brown out of the mix offensively, but they were able to make up for that scoring from their guards."

Seattle U would score the first five points of this matchup before UC San Diego would get seven straight and control a five point lead at halftime. The third quarter was full of back and forth scoring with the Redhawks trailing by as much as 11 entering the fourth.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Taliyah Clark had SU within two before UCSD's Sydney Brown knocked down a triple of her own to make it a five point game with about five minutes remaining. A layup from Howard and a three-pointer from Irena Korolenko tied the ball game at 54 with 1:39 to play. UCSD's Grace Talbot would convert on a three of her own to put UCSD in the lead for good.

Howard logs another stellar performance, finishing with 21 points on 7-for-15 from the field, with six assists, four rebounds, three steals and a block. The junior from Spokane, Wash., has recorded at least 18 points and three steals in three straight games.

"Peyton is playing some great basketball," said Barcomb. "We will need to find another consistent scorer to take some of the work load off her."

Seattle U's bench had a strong showing this afternoon, outscoring the Tritons, 24-8, thanks to nine from Clark and seven from Korolenko.

Seattle U will begin Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Sam Houston, starting at 4:30 p.m. pacific time.
