SEATTLE – Seattle U men's basketball burst out of a rough offensive stretch to shoot 56 percent from the field in the second half, including 6-of-12 from three, closing out their final non-conference home game with a 72-58 win over visiting Alcorn State Sunday evening in the Redhawk Center.

The Redhawks improve to 8-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 at home this year. The Braves dropped to 3-8 on the year.

All 10 Redhawks who saw the court scored on the night while eight different players hit at least one three as the squad finished with 13 (of 32, 40.6%). Cameron Tyson and Paris Dawson led the way with 13 points apiece. Alex Schumacher and Riley Grigsby added nine points each.

Jeremiah Kendall was the star for Alcorn State, finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Dontrell McQuarter joined in him double figures with 10 points.

It was a sluggish start for the Redhawks, who turned the ball over four times in the opening minutes as Alcorn State went up 4-0. The teams traded runs through the period and the Braves took a 31-29 lead into the break.

Despite seven threes in the half, Seattle U shot just 35 percent, coupled with 10 turnovers.

But they found their stride in the second. Tyson opened the frame with back-to-back threes and, following a pair of Alcorn State free throws, the Redhawks put together a 5-0 spurt that opened up a 40-33 advantage.

A 9-0 Redhawk run called by a Dawson three, ballooned the lead to 13, 50-37 with 13:20 to play.

"We haven't been playing well lately so it was good to leave this game with a 14 point win," said Head Coach Chris Victor. "We didn't start off the way we like. We turned the ball over a lot early and looked a little sloppy, but we were able to settled in. We used our defense to create some separation, we started to get some stops, rebound the ball well. We need to start putting together more stretches like that."

Alcorn State was able to whittle the spread back down to one with just under eight minutes remaining, but the Redhawks answered with 12 unanswered points, including seven from Dawson, that opened back up another 13-point advantage, 69-56, with three minutes to play.

"Paris was big for us tonight," said Victor. "He was a little banged up, so for him to come in and play that many minutes, make some big shots, force some big stops including a that charge at the end, he's a tough kid."

The Braves would not score a field goal in the final 7:53, managing just three free throws in the span.

The Redhawks pack their bags for warmer weather as they travel to Hawaii for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, hosted by University of Hawaii. Seattle U opens play on Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. PT against unbeaten Utah State. The Redhawks will also play on Dec. 23 and Dec. 25 to close out non-conference play.
