GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Alex Schumacher drained a putback jumper with 0.6 seconds remaining in overtime and Seattle U men's basketball rallied for the second straight game to earn hard-fought 80-78 victory at North Dakota Saturday afternoon at the Betty Englestad Sioux Center.
The win moved the Redhawks to 7-1 and marked their third road victory of the young season. North Dakota dropped to 5-7 on the year.
Cameron Tyson led all scorers with 24 points, including four threes. Kobe Williamson had a career high 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 3-of-3 free throws. Riley Grigsby added 13 points and Brandon Chatfield had 10, including a 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line. Schumacher finished with six points, including the game-winner.
North Dakota was paced by Elijah Brooks' 17 points and eight rebounds. Jalun Trent added 12 and Brady Danielson chipped in 11.
A slow start saw the Redhawks trail by as many as 17, 38-21, in the first half and finish the frame with just 19 points on 9-of-32 field goal shooting and 1-of-11 from three.
"We know how hard it is to win here, we knew how talented (North Dakota) is and they came out and punched us in the face in the first half and we weren't ready for it," said Head Coach Chris Victor. "But the way we fought, the way we stayed together, this was a great team win for our program, and we got better."
But the tide turned in the second and Seattle U returned from the locker room with a renewed defensive spirit that fueled an offensive surge.
"At halftime we talked about playing with confidence and being aggressive on defense," said Victor. "Our ball pressure in the first half was terrible, we weren't being us. We allowed them to be comfortable, and they were making shots. So it was about getting back to being us, competing and play who we are and see what we could do in the last 20."
Forcing four UND turnovers in the first four minutes of the second half, the Redhawks jumped out to a 12-4 start and cut the deficit to single digits, 40-31, at the 16:13 mark.
Riding their defensive efforts, Seattle U continued to chip away, pulling to within four, 42-38, on a Tyson three with 13:41 to play.
The Fighting Hawks pushed the spread back to as many as nine, but Seattle U surged again and a Grigsby hook shot in the lane with 1:27 to play gave the Redhawks their first lead since early in the first half, 66-65.
With Seattle U holding a 70-67 lead in the final seconds of regulation, UND got a three-point play from Trent to force extra time.
North Dakota scored first in overtime, but a pair of Chatfield free throws and a Tyson jumper put Seattle U up, 74-43. The Fighting Hawks snatched the lead right back before Dawson stepped up with two huge back-to-back driving layups for a 78-75 advantage.
UND would tie the score at 78-all on a Brooks three with 37 seconds remaining setting up the Redhawks' final possession. On a missed three from Tyson, Schumacher came up with the offensive rebound just outside the key and floated the game-winning jumper with 0.6 seconds remaining. A UDN Hail Mary attempt fell short.
The Redhawks remain on the road for one more, traveling to Corvallis, Ore., on December 15 to face Oregon State. Tip-off from Gil Coliseum is set for 7:30 p.m.
