PORTLAND – Rallying from a six-point halftime deficit, Seattle U men's basketball outscored University of Portland 44-26 in the second half on their way to an 80-68 victory Saturday night at the Chiles Center.
The win moves the Redhawks to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2007-08. It also marks the sixth straight win over the Pilots (4-2).
In the end it was a balanced effort by Seattle U, who shot 53 percent from the field and finished with 10 threes, the fourth consecutive game with double digits from deep.
Cameron Tyson paced the Redhawks with 18 points, including four threes. Alex Schumacher had 14 points and eight rebounds. Emeka Udenyi and Brandon Chatfield had 12 points apiece, while Viktor Rajković and Seyi Reiley each chipped in eight.
Portland was led by Tyler Robinson's 22 points and eight rebounds. Moses Wood had 11 and Alden Applewhite had 10 off the bench.
Seattle U started hot, hitting four threes for their first 12 points, including three from Tyson and one from Schumacher. An 8-0 Redhawk run made it 20-12 and forced a Portland time out.
The home team would storm back, using physical play to earn trips to the charity stripe and saddle the Redhawks with foul trouble. Portland would lead by as many as eight in the frame before Reiley closed out the half with a putback layup. The Pilots took a 42-36 advantage into the break.
A 10-0 run to open the second half saw the Redhawks reclaim the lead, 46-42. The lead would stretch to double digits on a Udenyi hook shot with 7:43 to play and the Redhawks cruised down the stretch.
Seattle U returns to the Redhawk Center on Wednesday, Nov. 23 to host Pacific Lutheran. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
