SEATTLE – Seattle U men's basketball got a second consecutive 30+ point performance from junior Cameron Tyson, plus double-digit performances from three additional players as the Redhawks led wire-to-wire in a 83-71 win over Portland State Sunday evening at the Redhawk Center.
Seattle U moved to 3-0 on the young season with its ninth all-time win over the Vikings (0-2).
Tyson's numbers were near mirror to his 35-point effort in the season opener at UC San Diego. On Sunday, he went 10-for-21 from the field, including 8-of-15 from three, and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe for 32 points.
Paris Dawson, a transfer from Portland State, who saw his first action of the season on Wednesday, had a breakout night against his former team, finishing with 18 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Alex Schumacher added 13 points and five assists, while Seyi Reiley rounded out the Redhawks' double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Portland State got 19 points from Jorell Saterfield and 14 from Cameron Parker. No other Viking reached double figures as the visitor was held to just 33 percent FG shooting and 6-for-24 from three.
The teams were slow to find the bottom of the basket to open play with Brandon Chatfield finally putting a point on the board at the 17:35 mark with a free throw. Tyson would follow with a layup on the Redhawks' next possession.
The Vikings would go without a field goal until the 14:45 mark and Seattle U made it a double-digit lead, 19-9 at the 10:01 mark of the frame. A chippy and physical first half saw 24 total fouls, including five technical fouls.
After Seattle U carried a 43-34 lead into the break, the Vikings pulled to within five, 51-46, with 13:41 remaining. But they would get to closer as Tyson hit two big threes and the Redhawks made good on a stretch of free throws to extend the lead back to double digits.
A six-day break in action will resume on Saturday, Nov. 19 at University of Portland. Tip off from the Chiles Center is set for 5 p.m.
