SEATTLE - Women's soccer ended the regular season with a bang, knocking off Southern Utah, 4-1, during senior day on Saturday. Kacey LaBoda scored a brace as the Redhawks clinched at least a top-2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
"I think the way the team played today was a testament to our seniors," said head coach Julie Woodward. "We scored some great goals and I thought LaBoda had a tremendous game for us."
Mo Nagel got the party started for the Redhawks, scoring the opening goal at the 17' mark in the first half, finishing off a pass from Hailee Rasmussen. LaBoda would follow with her first of two goals scored on the day, finding the back of the net in the 24th minute. Seattle U would fly into the break with the 2-0 lead.
The Redhawks would add two more to their lead once the second half got underway. Caroline Penner tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 53rd minute of play, courtesy of an assist by Kaylee Coatney. That was followed by the second goal of the match for LaBoda, who cleaned up a loose ball in the box to pick up her brace.
Southern Utah would break up the shutout effort from the Redhawks, as they scored in the 85th minute, but that Redhawks would squash the comeback attempt, going on to secure the 4-1 win.
The match saw 21 different Redhawks log minutes on the pitch and marked the last regular season game for 12 seniors, all of which played in today's game.
"Today's game was a great day to honor our 12 seniors for everything that have given to this program," said head coach Julie Woodward. "I feel very blessed and honored to have not only outstanding student athletes, but women of such high character on this team."
With the win the Redhakws close out their regular season with a 11-5-3 mark and a record of 8-1-2 in conference. The win also secured them at least a top-2 finish in the season standings and a first-round bye in the WAC tournament next week. They will await the result of the Utah Valley and Utah Tech match to see their final positioning.
