SEATTLE - Redhawks men's soccer earned a hard fought win over Utah Valley, 1-0, at a rain drenched Championship Field on Friday. Richard Bedats kept his hot streak going by scoring the game winner, as the Redhawks pushed their winning streak to three.
Bedats took no time to put his stamp on the game, scoring in just the second minute of action off of a perfectly placed pass by Mo Mohamed. The goal was Bedats' third in as many games, after not having a single goal in his Redhawk career entering last week. It was also the midfielder from Slovakia's second game winner of the season, as his brace vs Utah Tech proved to be the difference in that match as well.
The quick goal from the Redhawks proved to be the only one of the match for either side, as the remaining 88 minutes of action were hard fought but with no scoring. Seattle U had a bend but don't break approach to the final stretch of the match, as the Wolverines brought an onslaught of possession and shots as the final minutes ticked off. Ultimately, it was the defense that secured the three points for the Redhawks, as they would battle until the end to pickup the 1-0 result.
A big reason for the shutout was goalkeeper Akili Kasim, who was called to action in several pivotal moments for SU. In total, he made six saves, with each ensuing save being more high pressure than the last. His play earned him his second straight clean sheet. The shutout was also a historic one for the keeper from West Seattle, as he moved into first place all-time in shutouts for a goalkeeper in Redhawk program history with 20. He now has the record for wins (34) and shutouts in net for Seattle U.
The win pushes the Redahwks to 5-6-1 on the season and 4-1 (12 pts) in conference play. Next up for them is a matchup with California Baptist on Sunday, Oct. 23, at Championship Field. Kickoff between the Lancers and Redhawks is scheduled for 1 pm PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
