PHOENIX - Seattle U women's soccer snagged a road victory over Grand Canyon, 1-0, Friday night in Phoenix.

The two sides were locked in a stalemate through the first half and into much of the second half. The Lopes had several quality chances in the second half, but Jessica Berlin did not allow any of them to get passed her gloves as she recorded five saves.

"I would have to give a lot of credit to Jess and the back line for a pretty incredible defensive performance," said head coach Julie Woodward. "We definitely shifted gears in the second half and brought out a lot more energy."

Seattle U were the ones to ultimately find the back of the net late thanks to that shift in energy. In the 82nd minute, U'i Kaaihue scored a brilliant goal to put the Redhawks out in front with just minutes left to play. That goal proved to be enough, as the Redhawks would go on to get the shutout win, 1-0.

"U'i scored an incredible goal and helped impact the game," Woodward added. "I have been really happy with the way the team has competed our last two games against some very good teams."

With the win, the Redhawks improve to 5-5-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in conference play. The shutout was also their sixth of the season and already their second inside of WAC play.

The Redhawks will have a bit of a break in action, having their next match fall on Saturday, October 8, when they host Utah Valley. The game between the Wolverines is scheduled for a 7 pm PT kickoff and will be broadcast live on ESPN +. i
