SEATTLE - Seattle U women's soccer soared to their first win of the season as they took down Fresno State, 2-0, Saturday night at Championship Field. The Redhawks secured their second consecutive shutout in the win.
The Redhawks, who were kept off of the scoreboard in their season opener, would not be denied on the night. After several quality opportunities were thwarted by the offsides flag, SU was finally able to cleanly breakthrough in the 33'.
Jessica Berlin quickly played the ball to the outside and the foot of Kait Raffensperger, who sent a perfectly placed ball up the field to the feet of Mo Nagel. Nagel then sent a through ball to Brooke Wilson who finished off the sequence by netting the ball, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.
After the halftime break, Seattle U quickly looked to double their lead. In the 56', Wilson laid the ball off to Taylor Marks in the corner. Marks would then send a quick cross into the box and found a streaking Hallie Bergford for the tap in. Just like that SU was up by two.
For the second consecutive match to start the season, the Redhawks did not allow a goal. This despite the Bulldogs winning the possession battle 60-40. Fresno State was able to put two of their seven shots on frame, but Berlin stopped both of them to maintain her second clean sheet and finish off the 2-0 win.
"It was an incredibly tough and physical game and we showed up to play," said head coach Julie Woodward. "Our back line was solid and defended extremely well leading to another shut out."
