Redhawks Picked First in WAC Preseason Coaches Poll

DENVER - Seattle U men's soccer was tabbed first in the Western Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, while goalkeeper Akili Kasim and forward Declan McGlynn both make Preseason All-WAC.

DENVER - Seattle U men's soccer was tabbed first in the Western Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, while goalkeeper Akili Kasim and forward Declan McGlynn both make Preseason All-WAC. 

Coming off of a season that saw the Redhawks capture the WAC Tournament title and return to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the programs modern Division I era, Seattle U was voted favorites in the WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll with eight of the possible 10 first place votes and 80 points. The remaining two votes were cast for Grand Canyon (68 points), who were last year's regular season champions and the team that the Redhawks defeated in penalties for the postseason crown. 

Coming in third in the poll is this season's tournament host in California Baptist at 61 points. Utah Valley (58 points) and Air Force (50 points) rounded out the top five. San Jose State (43 points) were voted sixth while UNLV and UTRGV were in a tie for seventh, with both garnering 32 points. Utah Tech (14 points) and Houston Baptist (12 points) rounded out the poll. 

Akili Kasim, a graduate student from West Seattle, Wash., made his second consecutive All-WAC Preseason team. He was named to the WAC All-Tournament Team following his game winning penalty save in the championship game last season. Kasim was also selected to Second Team All-WAC and the All-Far West Region last season. 

Declan McGlynn, a senior from Kirkland, Wash., is coming off of a season that saw him record eight goals and dish out five assists. His play last season earned him a spot on First Team All-WAC in 2021 and All-Far West Region Team. 

The Redhawks will be back in action this Friday, Aug. 19 when they close out their preseason schedule with a home battle vs Oregon State at 2:00 PM. They will open regular season play with a 6-game road trip, starting with a matchup with Notre Dame on Aug. 25.
