KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the fifth consecutive year, Seattle University men's basketball has earned the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award. In addition, a record six Redhawks were named to the NABC Honors Court.
The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize men's basketball programs that completed the 2021-22 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men's basketball players who finished the 2021-22 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
The Redhawks compiled a 3.416 team GPA for the 2021-22 academic year, including a 3.519 team GPA during the winter quarter. Seattle U was one of three WAC programs to make the list along with California Baptist and Tarleton State.
Kyree Brown, Brandton Chatfield, Rip Economou, Riley Grigsby, Jaren Nafarrete and Matt Vail all took home the Honors Court recognition. The honor was the second straight for Economou, Grigsby and Vail, who were all academic seniors in 2021-22, each earning their undergraduate degree in June. Brown, Chatfield and Nafarrete were all first-time honorees as each was academically a junior in 2021-22.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that multiple Redhawks have been named to the NABC Honors Court. Three players were honored in 2020-21, four were honored in 2019-20 and two players were honored in 2018-19.
