SEATTLE – Maintaining its standard of academic excellence, Seattle University athletics performed well in the most recent Academic Progress Report (APR), released by the NCAA this week. The Redhawks recorded a four-year APR score of 988, coming in above the NCAA Division I average of 984.
Seattle U also posted a 985 average score across their 18 sports in the 2020-21 findings. Eight SU programs tallied a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2020-21 report. Men's golf, men's tennis, women's cross country, women's rowing, women's golf, softball, women's swimming, and women's tennis each recorded perfect marks.
The public announcement of APRs returned after a one-year hiatus. This spring, the Division I Board of Directors voted to continue to suspend APR penalties for an additional year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, it supported the public release of the APR data.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student athletes are tracked.
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success.
APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The APR scores released today reflect academic rates from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21 academic years.
