HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Seattle U Redhawks had their 2022 WAC Tournament run end in the semi-finals, falling 1-0 to Stephen F. Austin after beating New Mexico State 5-3 in eight innings earlier in the day.

The Redhawks sit at 32-24 overall after today's two games. This is the third consecutive year that Seattle U has won at least three games in the WAC Tournament.

Carley Nance saw action in both games, earning the win in game one. She became the first pitcher in Redhawks history to have three seasons with 100 or more strikeouts, recording her 100th in the first inning against Stephen F. Austin.

Lily Garcia was huge offensively: she doubled in the winning run in the eighth against New Mexico State, then ripped a gap double in the seventh against Stephen F. Austin as the Redhawks nearly rallied to tie.

GAME ONE

The Redhawks staged a dramatic comeback, scoring three runs in the sixth then winning it on a double from Garcia in the eighth. Kalyn Hill was huge for the Redhawks, reaching safely in all four of her plate appearances and coming around to score the winning run from first.

Madison Kahwaty kept her hot WAC Tournament performance going with a monstrous home run to dead centerfield that started the sixth-inning rally for Seattle U. Kamryn Coleman came up big with an RBI double in extras as well as one of six different Redhawks to either score a run or drive one in.

The win made Seattle U 5-0 in the WAC Tournament against New Mexico State over the last three years and 11-3 overall against NMSU in that time.

GAME ONE SCORING
  • Third Inning: A walk with the bases loaded gave New Mexico State a 1-0 lead before Madrigal rebounded with no more damage done.
  • Fourth Inning: New Mexico State hit a solo home run to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Sixth Inning: A towering solo blast from Kahwaty well beyond the centerfield wall cut it to 2-1. That was the start of a big rally from the Redhawks, who put five straight batters on base, eventually tying it up on a bases-loaded single from Milder and taking the lead on a wild pitch. New Mexico State would tie it back up at 3-3 in the bottom half.
  • Eighth Inning: It didn't take long in extras for Seattle U to regain the lead, with Hill scoring on a Garcia double just two batters into the inning. Garcia would score an insurance run for Seattle U on Coleman's double.

GAME TWO

It was a gritty performance in the circle from Nance, who muscled through four innings of one-run ball to keep the Redhawks close in a tight matchup. Stefanie Madrigal was just as strong, finishing up with two shutout innings of work in the circle.

Offensively, the Redhawks scrapped for chances. Kahwaty reached twice, stealing second in the first inning, while Sasaki and Wilson both reached in the third. Garcia had a one-out double in the seventh to put the tying run in scoring position, but Seattle U couldn't find that final big hit needed to get in the scoring column, however.

That's strikeout number 1??0??0?? on the season for Nance, who becomes the first Redhawk EVER with three seasons of 100+ Ks.#TogetherWeSoar https://t.co/Q7rJBFBs6Y

GAME TWO SCORING
  • Third Inning: Stephen F. Austin got one run on a double to the gap, but great throws from Sasaki in left and Kahwaty on the relay ended the inning at the plate, preventing a second run.
