ABILENE, Texas - Seattle U men's tennis opened its final Western Athletic Conference (WAC) cluster in Abilene, Texas, against UTRGV in a neutral site match at the Eager Tennis Pavilion. Singles victories from freshman Michael Frank, Veselin Kiselkov and Filip Stipic were not enough as the Vaquerous claimed the dual match victory, 4-3.
UTRGV opened the match by taking the doubles point. Sophomore Mats Krause paired with Frank (2-6) against Carlo Izurietal and Alberto Mello, while freshman Oliver Hall and Stipic (4-6) teamed up against Chris Lawrance and Sam Whitehead and sophomore Julian Worn and Kiselkov (4-6) fell to Misha Kvantaliani and George Hutchings on court one.
Junior Lars Schmassmann (1-6, 1-6) and Krause (3-6, 3-6) would be the first two singles matches to finish, falling to Lawrance and Mello, respectively. Frank earned the Redhawks' first point, clinching a 7-5, 6-3, victory over Sam Whitehead on court four, while Stipic (6-3, 7-6 (7-3)) earned his team leading 13th single victory against Carlo Izurieta to keep the Redhawks in the dual match. Worn (5-7, 6-3, 2-6) would drop his match to Kvantaliani on court one, giving the Vaquerous the dual match victory. Kiselkov (6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3)) would pick up a consolation victory on court three over Hutchings in a third set tiebreaker.
The Redhawks will face off against Chicago State Saturday at 7 a.m. pacific time with the winner advancing to the WAC tournament in Beaumont, Texas.
