SEATTLE – The Seattle U Redhawks and Utah Valley Wolverines split their Friday doubleheader, with Seattle U winning 8-0 in five innings before dropping a 7-4 extra-innings thriller in game two.

The Redhawks are 25-22 overall and 11-9 in WAC play after today's games with four more games to play in the regular season.

Kalyn Hill continued her hot hitting with two big games, going 4-for-8 with five RBI across the two games, including her fifth home run of the day. Lily Garcia also had a home run, a three-run shot in the first inning of game one.

GAME ONE

The offense came early and often for the Redhawks, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and won 8-0 in five innings. Seattle U had six extra-base hits, all from different batters, in the five-inning affair. Seattle U would score in every inning.

Tai Wilson was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, her second career perfect game at the plate that included her fourth triple of the season. Garcia hit a no-doubt homer in the first inning to drive in three runs early, with Hill also driving in multiple runs thanks to a two-run double.

Carley Nance allowed an infield single to the first batter of the game, then retired 15 in a row in an excellent pitching performance. She would strike out seven, facing just one batter over the minimum while allowing two hits.

GAME ONE SCORING
  • First Inning: The bats were alive early: three of the first four batters to the plate reached for Seattle U in what would be a four-run frame, highlighted by Garcia's third homer of the season.
  • Second Inning: Wilson laid down a perfect bunt for the single, with the throw going over the first baseman's glove to let the run score, making it 5-0.
  • Third Inning: Back-to-back errors by the Utah Valley infield allowed Seattle U to build its lead with another run.
  • Fourth Inning: With two outs, Hill smashed a double to the right-center wall, scoring two more to make it 8-0.
GAME TWO

Just a few big swings made all the difference in a game that went nine innings. Seattle U had a three-run homer in the first inning to take the lead, with a homer in the fifth by Utah Valley tying it and another homer in the ninth pushing the game out of reach.

The fifth-inning homer was the only real blemish to Stefanie Madrigal's day. The junior struck out five in six innings of work, giving up only five hits.

Seattle U's offense threatened plenty late, putting two runners in scoring position in the sixth and loading the bases in the seventh, but were unable to score. A tremendous diving catch by Olivia Viggiano kept Utah Valley off the board in the eighth, but four straight hits to start the ninth by the Wolverines would be the deciding factor.

The Redhawks valiantly fought back, loading the bases and getting a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally ended there.

  • Ninth Inning: Utah Valley scratched out one run to take the lead on a ball up the middle, then added three big insurance runs on a home run off the light pole in rightfield to make it 7-3. Nance's fourth walk of the game drove one run in to make the final score 7-4.
