LAS VEGAS – The season came to a close for the Seattle U Redhawks, who fell to UTRGV 61-71 in the opening round of the WAC Tournament. The game was tied up with four minutes to go before a pair of UTRGV three pointers put the Vaqueros up for good.
"We did our best starting in the second quarter to chase UTRGV off the line but you know they're going to shoot the three well," said Suzy Barcomb. "We had some good stops and then just couldn't connect when we needed to connect.
Seattle U's defense held UTRGV in check after a hot start, holding the nine-seeded Vaqueros to 17% shooting from deep across the second and third quarters. UTRGV made four threes in the fourth quarter, however, pushing ahead just enough to secure the win.
Courtney Murphy started strong with seven points in the first quarter, helping Seattle U to 47% shooting through one. After a coid streak in the second, the Redhawks powered back in the third, taking their first lead of the game after assisting on five of their first seven baskets of the quarter.
It was a back-and-forth game from there, with five ties and eight lead changes down the stretch. Seattle U missed its final ten shots of the game as the furious offensive attack just ran out of juice late.
"What a heck of a ballgame from Taliyah [Clark]," said Barcomb. "Hailey [Vice-Neat] doesn't show up in the scoring column but she made it so difficult to score over the top of her. Bree was Bree tonight and I greatly appreciate that effort she brings. I think all our seniors played a heck of a game."
Bree Calhoun led the team with 17 points and six assists, adding five rebounds as well. In all, the Redhawks had 45 rebounds, their second-most of the conference season and most since grabbing 51 against Tarleton State in January. Four different players had 5+ rebounds, led by Murphy's ten.
Taliyah Clark scored 13 points in her first career start, just one point off her career high. The freshman set a new career high in minutes, playing 26 while going a perfect 3-for-3 from deep. Peyton Howard added eight points and four rebounds, while Irena Korolenko put up seven points off the bench.
