SEATTLE – Riley Grigsby, Cameron Tyson and Darrion Trammell combined for 60 points and Seattle University men's basketball made history with a 74-66 win over Chicago State, claiming at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular season title Saturday at the Redhawk Center.
Seattle U snapped a 30-30 halftime draw against the pesky Cougars and puts its foot on the gas down the stretch for the program's first-ever conference championship as a Division I. The Redhawks moved to 23-8 on the season and conclude WAC play at 14-4. They will await results from around the league tonight to determine seeding for next week's WAC Tournament in Las Vegas.
Grigsby finished with 22 points, including 12 in the first half as the rest of the squad struggled to get going offensively. Trammell added 20 points and Tyson finished with 18, including 14 in the second half. The redshirt sophomore from Bothell, Wash., was the cog in the Redhawks' second-half surge burying four threes in the frame.
Chicago State freshman Brandon Betson poured in a game-high 31 points, including a step-back jumper with 10:51 to play that saw the Cougars on top, 51-48.
Tyson would respond with a triple and Trammell and Emeka Udenyi added buckets of their own to make it 55-51, Seattle U at the eight-minute mark.
Betson answered with a pair of free throws and a long three to put CSU up one, but 11 straight points from Tyson, including three consecutive threes swung the momentum to the home team, 66-58, with just under four to play. Grigsby would hit back-to-back buckets in the pain to make it a 12-point game and, with the crowd on their feet, the Redhawks held on for final moments of their 23rd win.
