CHICAGO – The final game of the regular season went down to the wire, with the Seattle U Redhawks securing a dramatic 57-54 win over the Chicago State Cougars.
Seattle U held Chicago State to just 28% shooting from the field and 15% from deep. That included just one three-pointer in the second half and just two field goals in the final three minutes of the game. The Redhawks made five of six free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
"Hailey [Vice-Neat] was outstanding on the defensive end of the floor, boxing out and defending shooters," said Suzy Barcomb. "Barbara [Rangel] was a great presence inside and Courtney made some key free throws down the stretch that kept us ahead as Chicago State really played an outstanding game."
The Redhawks trailed with under a minute remaining, only for McKenzi Williams to nail a dramatic three with 45 seconds left to retake the lead at 52-50. Barbara Rangel got a big block on the very next possession as the Redhawks secured the win.
Courtney Murphy had 17 points, her third straight game in double figures. Williams had ten points, all in the second half, as well as six rebounds and a team-high five assists. Irena Korolenko had eight points in the first quarter for the Redhawks, matching Chicago State's first-quarter output as Seattle U built its early lead.
Hailey Vice-Neat had seven rebounds to lead the team, giving her 13 over the last two games. Murphy and Bree Calhoun each had two of Seattle U's seven steals.
The Redhawks will head to the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas next as either the #9 or #10 seed. Their next game will be on March 8 at the Michelob Ultra Arena: if the Redhawks are the #9 seed, they will play at 12:00 pm PT. If they are the #10 seed, they will play at 2:30 pm PT.
