SEATTLE – Throughout the month of April, the Seattle U Student Athlete Advisory Committee is sponsoring a Food Drive to support the Seattle U Food Pantry organized by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. The Food Pantry, which opened in 2018, provides free, supplementary food to the Seattle U Community to support food security.
There are multiple ways to donate food items, including in person at upcoming Redhawk athletic events, or online. Collections will be taken at the following April home games:
Tennis (Courts at Championship Field) – April 1, April 3
Softball (Logan Field) – April 1- 2, April 12
Baseball (Bannerwood Park) – April 8-10, April 19 - 20
Online donations can be made through OMA's Amazon wish list.
According to a recent study conducted by the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice at Temple University (The Hope Center | For College, Community, and Justice (hope4college.com), 45% of college students struggle with hunger. In that same study, students struggling with hunger reported "an overbearing concern of when they are going to eat next," "inconsistent energy," "lack of mental concentration," and "going to class day after day distracted by hunger and a rumbling stomach." Suggested items for donation include: Canned Vegetables (corn, peas, mixed vegetables), Canned Tomatoes, Canned Vegetable Soups, Sauces & Pastes (Curry, Tomato), Bread & Wrap Varieties (Loaves, Bagels, English Muffins, Tortilla, Pita), Shelf-Stable Milk Boxes (Non-Dairy, Dairy), Assorted Grains (Rice, Quinoa, Farro), and Dry Noodles (Egg, Vermicelli, Ramen, Udon).
