SEATTLE - With eight runs scored in a three inning span, Seattle U baseball was able to takedown Sacramento State, 16-13, Saturday afternoon at Bannerwood Park.
The Redhawk offense picked up where they left off last night with a big first inning output. Shane Jamison, Jackson Reed and Matt Boissoneault all picked up an RBI in the first, with Reed coming home to score on a wild pitch to get out to a 4-0 lead.
Sacramento State would respond over the next couple of innings, crossing five total between the second and fourth to gain their first and only lead of the ballgame.
Derek Gellos would end the Hornet run with a single in the bottom of the fifth that brought home Jamison. The Redhawks cross three more in the inning on an RBI single by Grant Heiser and a 2-run homerun by Boissoneault as SU gained the 8-5 advantage.
Morgan White took over on the mound in the fifth inning, going four innings while giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. White would also strike out seven Hornet batters in 64 total pitches.
SU would add to their run total in the sixth with a Kyle Sherick pinch hit solo homerun and a sac fly by Jamison that allowed for Gavin Rork to come in.
After a one run inning for Sacramento State in the top of the seventh, Seattle U would score six in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a 2-run homerun by Reed. The Redhawks batted around the order as they sent 11-players to the plate in the inning.
Despite having a 16-7 lead, the Redhawks would have to hold on for the win over the final two innings. After the Hornets scored six in the eighth, Alex Jemal was called out of the bullpen.
Jemal was able to convert his second straight save opportunity after he got the final six outs of the ballgame, striking out three of them.
The win gave the Redhawks their second straight conference series win and improved them to 4-2 in WAC play. They also improved to 3-1 at Bannerwood Park.
Next up is a 1-game showdown with Portland on Tuesday, March 22. First pitch between the Pilots and Redhawks is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Joe Etzel Field in Portland.
