LAS CRUCES - Seattle U baseball took the series win over New Mexico State, taking down the Aggies, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Presely Askew Field in Las Cruces.
It did not take long for the Redhawks to jump into the lead, after a Shane Jamison single brought home Gavin Rork in the bottom of the first inning. After a one run response by the Aggies in the bottom of the second, a solo homerun by Derek Gellos put SU back on top 2-1 after three.
The back-and-forth affair that happened last night, rolled over into this afternoons as well. NMSU would tie the ball game back up in the bottom of the third inning, just for the Redhawks to pull back in front after an RBI single by Andrew Haight that allowed Jackon Reed to cross home plate.
Lost in the battle of the bats was an impressive outing from Peter Chronowski. In his third start of the year, the junior went eight innings with six hits and three earned runs while striking out eight Aggies. The outing gave him his first win of the season.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Redhawks were able to draw three walks to load the bases in a 3-3 ballgame with two outs. In the following at-bat, Kyle Sherick would reach on a throwing error by NMSU that brought Jamison in to score from third and give the Redhawks the lead.
The Redhawks would then secure the win as Kohl Petersen sat the Aggies down in order as he picked up his first save of the season. The win secured the series victory over the Aggies to open up conference play.
Game three of the series is scheduled for tomorrow, March 13 at Presely Askew Field in Las Cruces. First pitch between between Seattle U and NMSU is set for 11 AM as the Redhawks look to get the sweep.
