CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Seattle U Redhawks fell in a pair of tight games, putting together two furious comebacks but coming up empty handed. The Redhawks fell 6-8 to UC San Diego in the first game of the day, then dropped one to CSUN 7-8.

The Redhawks are 7-5 on the season with three more games to play this weekend.

Carley Nance added two more extra-base hits on the day, with a homer in game one and an RBI double in game two. Katie Walling hit her first career home run to start the Seattle U rally in game two.

GAME ONE

The Seattle U Redhawks bounced back from an early deficit, only for the longball to spell the difference in a 6-8 loss to UC San Diego. The Redhawks trailed 4-0 entering the fourth inning and were without a hit at that point, then went 6-for-12 over the next two innings to take the lead.

A three-run home run in the sixth inning put UC San Diego back in front for good. This was just the second time this season that the Redhawks lost a game after leading at any point.

Three different Redhawks had multiple hits in the game: Olivia Viggiano, MeKenzie Madokoro, and Nance went a combined 6-for-11. Madison Kahwaty scored two runs, joining Madokoro in that regard, while Kalyn Hill ripped a two-run double, already the fourth extra-base hit of her collegiate career.

GAME ONE SCORING
  • First Inning: The Tritons managed three hits and four baserunners in the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead.
  • Fourth Inning: Two more two-out hits added to UC San Diego's lead, making it 4-0 on a double. The bottom half saw the Redhawks offense come to life, putting the first four batters on base safely, punctuated by Nance's moonshot to make it 4-3.
  • Fifth Inning: The bats stayed hot in the fifth as both Madokoro and Hill ripped RBI doubles. Madokoro's scored Viggiano from first, tying the game, before Hill brought in two for a 6-4 lead.
  • Sixth Inning: UC San Diego responded with a three-run home run, retaking the lead at 7-6. The Tritons would add another with an RBI single.

GAME TWO

The Redhawks nearly erased an early deficit, storming back with six runs in the final three innings but falling to CSUN 7-8. Kahwaty, Nance, and Walling all had RBI extra-base hits, with Kahwaty and Nance doubling and Walling homering.

Grace Luderer frustrated the Matador bats all game long, recording a career-best nine strikeouts without allowing an earned run in 5.2 innings of relief.

The Redhawks managed to push the tying run into scoring position in the sixth after falling behind 8-0, but were unable to complete the rally.

GAME TWO SCORING
  • First Inning: CSUN pounced early, scoring five runs in the first inning as six of the first seven batters reached base.
  • Third Inning: Walling's first career home run got the Redhawks on the board. CSUN would add three more runs in the bottom half, however, as Seattle U's second error of the day allowed the Matadors to build a rally.
  • Fifth Inning: The Redhawks forced misplays in the field with their speed, scoring four after Walling's single started the inning. Kahwaty and Hill had big RBI hits in the inning as the Redhawks batted around, putting seven batters on base and cutting it to an 8-5 game.
  • Sixth Inning: Wilson forced a misplay on a steal attempt, allowing a run to score from third. Nance's RBI double just two pitches later made it a one-run game.
NOTES
  • Viggiano (2x8, R, SB) moved past Alyson Matriotti and Sarah Petosa for sole possession of second place in steals in Seattle U history.
  • Madokoro (2x7, 2 R, 2B, RBI) is hitting .500 over the last four games.
  • Luderer (5.2 6 H, 0 ER, 9 K) recorded the most strikeouts by a Redhawk freshman since Nance's ten in 2018.
  • Walling (2x6, 2 R, HR) has driven in a run or come around to score on every hit in her career thus far.
  • Nance (3x6, R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) has eight extra-base hits, just two short of last year's total, achieved in 38 games.
