STANFORD, Calif. – The Seattle U Redhawks finished the weekend with a doubleheader split highlighted by excellent defense and pitching. Seattle U beat UIC 3-1 in extra innings, then fell 5-0 to the host Stanford Cardinal.

The Redhawks are 7-3 overall after this weekend, going 2-3 in five games in California.

Seattle U went 11 innings without allowing a run at one point, between UIC's second-inning run and Stanford's fifth-inning homer.

GAME ONE

A nail-biter of a game saw the Redhawks head to extras for the first time this year. Both teams were stymied by excellent pitching performances, with Stefanie Madrigal once again coming through in the circle for Seattle U with the complete game win.

Madrigal would retired ten in a row after allowing a fifth-inning single, with UIC unable to record a single hit off the junior after that. This was Madrigal's fourth complete-game win for the Redhawks: she has not allowed more than one run in any of those games.

Seattle U nearly took the lead in the seventh, putting the winning run in scoring position with no outs after Kalyn Hill sent a hard-hit ball to right. A close play at the plate later in the inning gunned down the Redhawk runner to keep the game tied, however.

The offense didn't stop pushing, however, and broke through in extras. Olivia Viggiano would score all the way from first, her second run of the game and ninth of the season. Carley Nance came through with an RBI single as well, giving her RBI on six of her seven hits this season.

GAME ONE SCORING
  • Second Inning: The Redhawks nearly stranded two in scoring position, getting a strikeout looking for the second out. UIC was able to poke a single through the left side in the next at-bat, however, to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Fourth Inning: The Redhawks tied it back up without a ball leaving the infield. An error and a walk put two on for Hill, who drove in the tying run on a grounder.
  • Eighth Inning: With two outs in extras, Madison Kahwaty ripped a ball to rightfield, allowing Viggiano to come all the way around from first to give Seattle U its first lead of the game. Nance added an insurance run with an RBI single on a full count in the next at-bat.

GAME TWO

A pair of Stanford homers were the difference in the game, coming in the fifth and sixth innings. Both teams used solid defense and pitching to keep this one tight all game long.

Nance was excellent in the circle, holding Stanford scoreless for the first 4.2 innings before a three-run home run broke the scoreless tie.

MeKenzie Madokoro was excellent at the plate in her first game of the year batting second. The senior reached safely in all three plate appearances, with a single and two walks.

The Redhawks threatened early on often, with the best chance coming in the third. Seattle U loaded the bases, all with two outs, and forced an early Stanford pitching change, but the Cardinal managed to work out of the jam.

GAME TWO SCORING
  • Fifth Inning: The scoreless tie was broken with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Stanford hit a three-run home run.
  • Sixth Inning: Stanford homered again with two outs, making it 5-0.

NOTES
  • Viggiano (2 R, SB) is now tied with Alyson Matriotti and Sarah Petosa for second in Seattle U history in steals with 43.
  • Madrigal (8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) has complete-game wins in four of her five appearances this year.
  • Madokoro (1x4, 2 BB) has reached safely in five of her last eight plate appearances.

Seattle U will be back on the road next weekend, taking part in the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, California.
