STANFORD, Calif. – Early offense led to a 7-0 Seattle U defeat Friday night, falling on the road to the Stanford Cardinal. The loss ends Seattle U's undefeated start to the season: the 5-0 start was Seattle U's best start in Division I history and best since starting 2008 11-0.
Stanford scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning in what proved to be the difference maker. The Redhawks held Stanford scoreless in four of the final five innings, broken up only by a two-run fifth. Unfortunately, the Redhawk offense was unable to cut into that early lead.
Olivia Viggiano singled to extend her hitting streak to five games, her fifth career hit streak of 5+ games. Lily Garcia also singled in the game.
After Stanford's early-game offense in the first, Stefanie Madrigal settled in, not allowing another run in her next three innings. Madrigal retired five of the final six batters she faced before ceding the circle to Grace Luderer, who would strike out two in the final two innings.
Madrigal took the loss in the game, ending a 16-game undefeated streak. During that stretch, Madrigal was 8-0 with a 2.04 ERA.
