SEATTLE – Darrion Trammell buried a three with 3.3 seconds remaining and Seattle U men's basketball closed out its final game of the season at Climate Pledge Arena with a bang, taking down the California Baptist Lancers, 67-64, Saturday afternoon.
The win gave Seattle U a season sweep of the Lancers and moved the Redhawks to 21-6 on the season and 12-2 in Western Athletic Conference play.
Yet another thriller between the two sides saw the Lancers tie the game at 64 with 13 ticks left in regulation. Following a timeout by CBU, the Redhawks had the ball and inbounded to Trammell. The guard brought the ball up the court, worked his way to the left side of the arch and with 3.3 seconds remaining, hit a step-back three to give the Redhawks the 67-64 lead. A near half-court attempt by the Lancers was no good as Seattle U secure the victory.
""We told Darrion, we're going to give you the ball with a flat screen up top, with some space and shooters in the corner, and it would be up to him to play a play," said Interim Head Coach Chris Victor. "We've seen him make passes out of that situation - the first game of the season he hit Cam for an open three and the win. Today, he had space and that's a great shot for him. The kid makes winning plays."
Trammell finished with 22 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Drawing the defensive assignment of Taran Armstrong, Trammell held the Lancer point guard to five points and four assists while forcing him into seven turnovers.
"Darrion played unbelievable defense the entire game," said Victor. "DT's a special defender who can dominate a game defensively. He was matched up against a very good point guard in Taran Armstrong and DT owned that matchup."
Defense was the name of the game in the opening frame as the Redhawks forced CBU into 12 turnovers and allowed just one offensive rebound. Seattle U was able to get out to a quick start in the game as a made free throw by Kyree Brown pushed their lead to eight at the 12:47 mark in the first half. That would be the Redhawks largest lead of the game as both sides kept the game close. A late 9-1 run by the Lancers left the Redhawks with a slim 25-23 lead at the half.
CBU would continue their strong run into the second half, as a Trey Armstrong layup would give the visitors their first lead of the game with 18:14 left to play. In all, there were nine lead changes in the second half and both teams exchanged baskets down the stretch.
Following a quiet first half, Cameron Tyson heated up in the second, knocking down three triples in the span of four minutes to re-spark the Redhawks offense. Riley Grigsby would also be a factor late, scoring 12 of his eventual game-high 23 points in the second half. Tyson finished the night with nine points while Brandton Chatfield added six off the bench.
Forcing CBU into 19 total turnovers while committing just six of their own, the Redhawks took 23 more shots and held a 19-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
The win gave the Redhawks their eighth of the season at Climate Pledge Arena and improved their overall home mark to 16-1 on the season.
Next up for Seattle U is a rematch with NM State on Monday. Tip off between the Aggies and Redhawks is scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Redhawk Center.
