STANFORD, Calif. – The Seattle U Redhawks split a pair of defensive duels, falling 5-2 to BYU before beating San Jose State 2-1 later that day. Olivia Viggiano had an RBI in game one and forced the error that scored Seattle U's second run in game two.

The Redhawks improve to 6-2 on the season after today's two games.

GAME ONE

Carley Nance was hot in the circle for the Redhawks, only allowing one hit in the first four innings and not allowing a runner to reach scoring position until the fifth. Nance would retire nine straight at one point, the third-longest streak of consecutive batters retired in her career.

Nance also recorded her 350th career strikeout in the game, joining Erin Martin and Shi Smith as the only Redhawks ever with 350+ career strikeouts.

Viggiano and Kalyn Hill kept rolling at the plate, with each driving in a run. BYU's late offense proved the undoing for the Redhawks, however, with the Cougars scoring all five runs in the fifth inning or later.

GAME ONE SCORING
  • Third Inning: The first two batters of the inning reached for the Redhawks to jumpstart the offense. It was Viggiano's groundout that put Seattle U on the board first, 1-0.
  • Fifth Inning: BYU ended Nance's hot stretch with a leadoff single, then tied the game up on a double to right center two batters later. BYU would take the lead with two outs on an infield single, making it 2-1.
  • Sixth Inning: BYU added another run in the sixth, making it 3-1 on an unearned run. The Redhawks responded immediately, as Hill's RBI single in the bottom half cut it back to a one-run game.
  • Seventh Inning: A wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk allowed BYU to stretch its lead to 5-2.
GAME TWO

A pitcher's duel saw Seattle U's combination of strong defense and Stefanie Madrigal in the circle to get the win over San Jose State.

Madrigal was excellent once again, allowing one run in her third complete-game win in four starts this year. Madrigal worked out of a few jams flawlessly: she stranded seven Spartans in scoring position in the game, including working out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. In all, the Redhawks held San Jose State to 1-for-9 hitting with runners in scoring position in the game.

The game was scoreless for the first three innings before Seattle U broke through in the fourth. Katie Walling's first career hit gave Seattle U the lead for good, with an insurance run one inning later helping Seattle U get the 2-1 win.

Viggiano had another two-hit game, her fourth of the year. MeKenzie Madokoro went 2-for-2, her ninth multi-hit game since the start of last year. In all, Madokoro went 3-for-5 across two games today.

GAME TWO SCORING
  • Fourth Inning: It was the Redhawks who struck first in the pitcher's duel. Walling's first career hit came with two outs and a runner in scoring position, driving in Mckenna Crum for a 1-0 lead.
  • Fifth Inning: The Redhawks took advantage of a pair of errors, doubling their lead on a throwing error after Viggiano's single.
  • Seventh Inning: San Jose State made it interesting late, with back-to-back singles to start the seventh. The Spartans would score one that inning but Seattle U held, getting the win.

NOTES
  • Viggiano (3x6, RBI) extended her hitting streak to seven games, tied for the longest of her career.
  • Kahwaty (1x4, R, 2 BB) has scored a run in six of her eight games this year.
  • The Redhawks are 8-2 in Madrigal's (7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 4 K) last ten starts.
The Redhawks play two tomorrow, starting with a matchup against Illinois-Chicago at 9:30 am PT.
