EDINBURG, Texas – Seattle U men's basketball drained 21 three pointers, including a school-record tying nine from Cameron Tyson, as the Redhawks rolled to a huge 102-62 Western Athletic Conference road win at UTRGV Wednesday night.
The win moved Seattle U to 20-6 on the season, marking the 15th 20-win season in program history and the first since 2017-18. The Redhawks also stay atop the WAC standings at 11-2.
The teams' second meeting in a one-week span could not have been more polar opposite. After hitting a season-low four triples on Feb. 10 in Seattle, the Redhawks opened the rematch hot and never let up the on the gas.
Tyson finished with 30 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including 9-of-16 from deep to match the Seattle U single-game record. Darrion Trammell added 19 points and eight assists, Kobe Williamson had 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Riley Grigsby added 10 points.
Eight different Redhawks had at least one three and all 12 players who saw action scored in the runaway win as Seattle U shot 50 percent from the field, tallying 31 assists on 38 field goals.
"It was just a matter of time before we would get not just one or two guys shooting well but the whole team and tonight was that night," said Interim Head Coach Chris Victor. "And it started from the beginning. We moved the ball really well to get us open shots, guys just kept trusting and believing, and tonight the seal broke."
Tyson hit back-to-back threes to spark an 8-0 run to open the game. He would finish with 17 in the half with Trammell adding 13 and six assists.
With the offense clicking, the Redhawks defense held the Vaqueros to 36 percent from the field and just 6-of-20 from three for the night.
Marek Nelson paced UTRGV with 18 points. RayQuan Taylor added 13 and Justin Johnson had 11.
Seattle U returns home for its next two, beginning Saturday, Feb. 19 with its final game of the season at Climate Pledge Arena.
