HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Shooting struggles early on led to a 54-73 defeat for the Seattle U Redhawks at Sam Houston. Seattle U outscored Sam Houston in the second half but 17% shooting in the first 20 minutes made the difference.
"This was our fourth game in eight days with a lot of miles in-between and we came out flat," said Suzy Barcomb. "We continue to struggle scoring points and it's putting too much pressure on our defense."
Bree Calhoun scored 24 points, with 22 in the second half, as a key part of Seattle U's transition game. The Redhawks would score 21 fastbreak points in the game, almost half the team's total.
This was Calhoun's fourth career 20-point game and first this season. It was also a career high for Calhoun, whose previous career high was 23, accomplished twice in 2020-21.
"Bree was a bright spot for us offensively," said Barcomb.
Four different Redhawks had multiple steals in the game as Seattle U forced 22 turnovers, their most since forcing 25 in the season opener against Northwest. McKenzi Williams, Georgia Kehoe, Peyton Howard, and Madeline Phillips all had two steals to help Seattle U record its eighth double-digit steal performance of the season, with 11 as a team.
After a foul-heavy first quarter saw 22 free throws combined, a second-quarter shooting slump pushed Sam Houston in front. The Redhawks went 1-for-14 in the second quarter and trailed by 21 at halftime.
Seattle U would respond in a big way: the Redhawks scored 21 points in the third quarter, led by Calhoun's ten points and four rebounds in the frame. Seattle U shot almost 30% better in the second half but couldn't overcome foul trouble that led to 37 free-throw line trips by Sam Houston.
Seattle U returns home next week, hosting Grand Canyon on Thursday, February 3 at 6:00 pm PT and New Mexico State on Saturday, February 5 at 2:00 pm PT.
