SEATTLE – Back home at Climate Pledge Arena Wednesday night, Seattle U men's basketball continued right where it left off on the road last week, using production from up and down the lineup to put away its eighth straight opponent, Stephen F. Austin, 70-62.
All nine Redhawks to step onto the court scored, helping propel the program to a historic 16-4 overall record and 7-0 mark in Western Athletic Conference play. The Lumberjacks dropped to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the WAC.
"We knew Stephen F. Austin was going to be a tough resilient team," said Interim Head Coach Chris Victor. "They are well coached and have won lot of big games. They weren't going to go down easy and give our guys credit, when they did make their run we showed some toughness."
Neither side shot the ball particularly well for much of first half and the score was knotted at 21-all with 5:23 to play in the frame. More than a minute later a pair of Trammell free throws would put the Redhawks in the lead and begin a 14-4 run to close out the half.
Grigsby would cap things off with a buzzer-beating three to send Seattle U into the locker room leading the Lumberjacks 37-25.
The momentum carried into the second as threes by Tyson and Grigsby kick-started a stretch that saw Seattle U open up an 18-point advantage.
But the Lumberjacks had a run in them. Muscling their way inside, SFA used an 8-0 spurt to cut the lead to five, 49-44.
Seattle U would answer yet again as a baseline jumper from Brandton Chatfield halted the spurt and threes by Tyson, Viktor Rajković and Vasja Pandža stretched the lead back to double digits, 60-49, with 7:56 to play.
SFA would get no closer than six down the stretch and the Redhawks would dribble out their 16th win of the season.
"Vasja and Viktor hitting back-to-back threes to push it back to 11 were huge, Brandt was huge for us down low and Emeka is so physical and dependable," Victor said. "This was one of those games where you have to stay together, you have to show your toughness and you have to stay resilient, and we did all oof those things to get the win tonight."
Riley Grigsby led Seattle U with 18 points, including 13 in the first half, to go along with nine boards. Cameron Tyson added 17 points and Darrion Trammell added 10 points and eight assists.
The Lumberjacks were paced by Gavin Kensmil's 19-point, 14-rebound double double. Calvin Solomon and Latrell Jossell also scored in double figures, adding 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The heart of WAC play continues Saturday with a battle with Sam Houston State for top billing in the WAC standings. The Bearkats will enter the match-up 8-1 in WAC play to Seattle U's 7-0. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is set for 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at goseattleu.com/tix or by calling the box office at 206-398-GOSU.
