SEATTLE – The Seattle U Redhawks took a tight one down to the wire with WAC-leading California Baptist before dropping a 66-76 game. Seattle U outscored the Lancers in the fourth quarter during the comeback attempt but couldn't close the gap enough down the stretch.
Courtney Murphy was big for the Redhawks, recording the second double-double of her career with 12 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. Murphy also had four steals, including three in the first quarter alone. Those four steals were Murphy's most since a career-high five against Warner Pacific in 2019.
Bree Calhoun came off the bench once again, providing a big offensive spark. Calhoun set a new career high with four made three-pointers en route to 16 points on the day. She previously had made three from long distance twice, coming in back-to-back games in 2021, against New Mexico State and UTRGV.
California Baptist's hot streak from deep in the second quarter made the difference in the game. The Lancers would make eight threes in the second quarter: outside of that frame, Seattle U held CBU to 18% shooting from deep and 35% shooting overall.
The fourth quarter saw Seattle U cut the deficit to as little as seven points thanks to hot three-point shooting and scrappy play on the glass, with the Redhawks recording six offensive rebounds and outrebound California Baptist 17-11 in the final quarter. The Redhawks just couldn't quite find enough of a hot hand to cut it beyond that though, as free throws down the stretch made the final margin ten points.
The Redhawks are home for two more WAC contests this week, hosting Abilene Christian on Thursday, January 20 at 6:00 pm PT and hosting Tarleton State on Saturday, January 22 at 2:00 pm PT.
