SEATTLE – The Seattle U Redhawks took the loss in their first action after the elongated holiday break, falling to Chicago State 61-54. Three Redhawks scored in double figures but cold shooting in the second half doomed the team. Seattle U falls to 5-7 overall this year and 0-1 in WAC play after today's game.
Courtney Murphy had 14 points, including a red-hot second quarter that saw the senior score ten points on five shots. McKenzi Williams had 14, her third-highest scoring game of the year and fifth double-digit performance in the last six games. Bree Calhoun had ten points and four offensive rebounds, her most since a career-best five on December 3, 2020.
The Redhawks had an eight-point lead at the half in large part thanks to Murphy's scoring spree. Seattle U made three three-pointers during an 11-2 run in the second quarter, with Murphy making two and Erin Tarasow draining one, to stretch the lead to double digits for the only time in the game.
Chicago State's pressing defense out of the halftime break allowed the visitors to claw back into the game, holding Seattle U to 1-for-4 shooting and five turnovers early in the third. Seattle U held onto a one-point lead entering the fourth, only for free throws to make the difference. Chicago State went 9-for-11 at the line in the final frame, allowing the Cougars to take the lead despite shooting just 33% in the quarter.
Seattle U hits the road for its first WAC action away from home this weekend. The Redhawks will play at Utah Valley on Thursday, January 13 at 5:00 pm PT and at Dixie State on Saturday, January 15 at 2:00 pm PT.
